Chapel 10/11: Being Champs for Christ

Faith

This week’s Chapel was given by Sue Ramsey, head girls basketball coach at Ashland University. Her message was on being CHAMPS for Christ, for each letter of the word “Champs,” she gave a word that we should be if we want to consider ourselves Champs for Christ, and these were as followed:

C – Commit; she gives the Biblical verse of Psalm 37:5 to back up her point, which reads as:   “commit your way to the Lord and trust in Him and will do this.” Ramsey claimed that with commitment you also have to have trust and these two are something that you need to look for daily because they are so fragile and can easily be broken if you do not think about this and why you are doing in on a day to day basis.

H – Humble; Ramsey is saying that we should be considering other people better than ourselves. It is not about us but it is about Christ and that we live our lives according to His way and not for our own selfishness. Ramsey uses the example of 1 Peter 5:6 “humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time.”

A – Abide; Ramsey states that we are to abide by the law of God and follow what He wants us to do and then we will bear the fruit of that.

M – Mindset; Ramsey says that when we focus on things of God that it helps rid us of other distractions in life. It is important to renew our minds everyday with things of God because of how easily we can get off of the right track of thinking and start selfishly thinking about what we want and not what God wants from us. She uses the scriptural verse for this of Colossians 3:2 “set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”

P – Perseverance; Ramsey says “you are going to have trials that make you go off of the path.” She is saying is that we all are going to go through things in life that are rough and where we question our faith. But the key to this is we must preserve through the challenges of life and we must use the other things that she talks about (such as mind-set) in order to do this.

S – Serve; lastly, the key to being Champs for Christ, as Ramsey puts it, is that we must serve others. She talks about her team and how they abide by the “I am third” method. This method is where based on what you put first, the sequence that she gives is “God,” “others,” and then “yourself.” Ramsey states that Jesus came and served as the greatest example of this and we should take His example and follow it.

This is what it means, according to Ramsey, what it is to be Champs for Christ. The challenge from this chapel is to take what you learned and apply it to your life so that you can become a Champ!
